Montemor-o-Novo is a city in the Alentejo region in Portugal. The city is located about 80 km east of the capital, Lisbon, and about 30 km west of the city of Évora, a World Heritage Site.
With about 12,000 inhabitants, it is the second-largest city in the district, only surpassed by the capital, Évora.
It is the seat of a municipality with 1,232.97 km² in area (one of the largest in Portugal) and 17,437 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 7 parishes.
It was in this city that São João de Deus was born, patron of hospitals, patients, and nurses.
The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Coruche, to the east by Arraiolos and Évora, to the south by Viana do Alentejo and Alcácer do Sal and to the west by Vendas Novas and one of the territories of the municipality of Montijo.
The municipality of Montemor-o-Novo is located in Central Alentejo and adjoins three other NUTS III regions. To the north, Lezíria do Tejo (municipality of Coruche), to the northwest, the Peninsula of Setúbal (municipality of Montijo), and to the south and southwest, Alentejo Litoral (municipality of Alcácer-do-Sal).
The municipality has an average altitude of 291 m above sea level.
The city of Montemor-o-Novo was built between three hills: (the largest) the Castle of Montemor-o-Novo, the church of Nossa Senhora da Visitação and the church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição.

Climate
The region where the municipality extends is characterized by a markedly Mediterranean climate.
It belongs to the District of Évora, Portugal's hottest district in the summer, with summers in the region being hot and dry and sometimes with temperatures above 40 º C. In winter the temperature can drop below 0 º C.
The annual average temperature is 15.4 º C, registering the maximum average in July (32 º C) and the minimum average in January (3.1 º C).
